2015 Course Descriptions

12-HR MASSAGE THERAPY FOR SPINAL CURVATURES

Massage therapist often ask us, how much help is massage, really, when it comes to relieving and reducing spinal curvatures? What are the reasons for spinal curvatures? How much pressure can we use when touching or stretching someone with spinal curvatures? Might we accidentally break a client's bone(s)? Does heat or cold help? My clients have been told they must have aggressive surgery - is there anyone out there that can help without needing surgery for severe curvatures? And so many more questions we plan to address in this course. Besides background presentations on this disorder, there will be hands-on application that relates to the information taught in this seminar.

6-Hr Phantom Limb Pain Course Description (Seminar)

Have you heard about virtual massage? Have you heard the term “mirror box therapy?” If not, you will hear about it in this seminar and we think you’ll be surprised at how effective it is. This seminar explores history related to the phantom limb phenomenon, including that of the individual who coined the term phantom limb pain. We’ll explore related risks, prevention, treatments, medications, and what studies reveal about types of pain associated with phantom limb pain and phantom limb sensations. Learn ways massage is effective in relieving phantom limb pain and ways massage is beneficial to amputees with or without phantom limb pains or sensations. We’ll also cover how to adjust protocol for massage sessions based on information shared by amputees regarding their conditions and their feelings about their conditions (psychological dynamics). Finally, prosthetic care and use that pertains to massage results  and that prevents delayed results.

6-Hr Post Traumatic Stress and Anxiety Disorders (Seminar)

We tend to think of folks coming back from the war when we hear the term “post traumatic stress disorder.” PTSD is not limited to soldiers. People are diagnosed with PTSD for many reasons and often live their entire lives under the influence of dangerous drugs because of it. Various studies, including those done through the VA (Veterans Administration), confirm that massage therapy performed by professionals with appropriate knowledge of these conditions is often highly beneficial. Therapists attending this seminar will gain understanding of the causes and effects of anxiety disorders, distinguish between post traumatic stress and other types of anxieties, realize the impact of added stress placed on and/or created from these disorders and how massage therapy helps. Additional topics addressed include the relevance of quantified scientific studies and how these validate the benefits and results of massage therapy. Bodywork for practicing techniques best suited for our PTSD and/or other anxiety clients will also be done – so bring your table or massage chair and gear.
